Unfortunately, many people around the UK will fall victim to a drug addiction or alcoholism at some point in their life; the drug epidemic is worsening, and this is causing concern amongst experts. Some are worried that drugs are becoming too easily obtainable in this country, which is why more and more people are ending up with an addiction.
In some cases, loved ones of those who have sadly passed away due to addiction will set up charities or events to raise awareness and funds for drug addiction treatments or clinics so that other families do not have to go through the same experiences as they had to. This is the case with John Bramble, who founded the Action on Addiction motorcycle ride in memory of his son who passed away because of drug abuse.
Masses of Support
The third annual Action on Addiction motorcycle ride from Weymouth to Exmouth will be taking place in Spring 2017; the event is held in order to collect funds for a treatment clinic that aid those battling an addiction. John Bramble created the event to honour his late son Craig who passed away in 2001.
In early 2016, hundreds of motorcyclists joined forces and took over the roads in the second running of the event, which raised over £3,300. John said that the event planned for 2017 has already gained masses of support from the likes of Snack Shack, Helmet City, South Coast Motorcycles, Trade Windows and Doors, and Stika. He went on to explain that riders will leave from South Coast Motorcycles at 10.30am on April 2nd and will be heading along the coast road towards West Bay. After a short pit stop at West Bay, the riders will carry on to Exmouth and finish at Queens Drive long-stay car park which is situated on the sea front. “We are asking for a donation of £5 per bike please, the ride is 125cc- and learner-friendly; trikes and scooters are most welcome too. The ride will be marshalled, and we have a recovery vehicle as well for the duration of the ride. This year’s ride raised £3,369.00 – let’s see if we can better that for 2017 ride,†said John.
Huge Loss
When speaking about the inspiration behind the event, John said, “On November 7th 2001, I lost my son Craig Bramble due to solvent abuse. This was a huge loss to the family. A friend of mine, Lorna McKenna, asked me would I organise a charity ride for her 50th birthday as she wanted to support a charity. At the time of asking, this coincided with a biker friend who I know had just started work for Clouds House. After hearing what great work they do for people with addiction problems, myself and Lorna came to an agreement that this would be a good cause to support. Clouds House are supported by the charity Action on Addiction who themselves were overwhelmed to hear we are going to organise this motorcycle ride for their charity.â€
