How a Sex Addiction Can Ruin Relationships

Sex addiction is an illness that is becoming increasingly common; although this kind of addiction is often jeered at and thought of as a ‘joke’ by society, it is all too real for some individuals. In fact, a sex addiction can ruin a person’s life. Once the addiction has developed, it will get to the stage where all this person will think about or talk about is sex; this can cause devastating consequences for those who are in relationships already. One such affected individual is Kieran Hayler, husband of former glamour model Katie Price; he had been suffering from a sex addiction that eventually led to an affair with his wife’s best friend.

Rebuilding Damaged Marriage

The 38-year old former glamour model revealed that her partner was battling a sex addiction when it was discovered he was having an affair with her best friend. Katie has explained the situation in her new autobiography Reborn. It details the two-year period between 2012 and 2014 in which she split from husband Alex Reid and then went on to marry current partner Kieran Hayler after just five weeks of dating.

The couple now have two children together – Jett aged three and two-year-old Bunny. However, Katie was shocked to discover that her husband had been having an affair with her best friend Jane Poutney as well as one other woman. Katie decided to take a break from the limelight for a while to focus on rebuilding her damaged marriage. She believes that her husband’s ‘trysts’ were the result of his sex addiction. She said, “I know people sneer, but if I didn’t believe Kieran had had an addiction, there’s no way I would be with him now.”

Committing to Addiction Therapy

As soon as she found out about the sordid affair, she went straight to Twitter to share the news; she posted, “Sorry to say me and Kieran are divorcing. Him and my best friend Jane Poutney been having a full blown sexual affair for seven months.” However, once she had time to think about it, she decided to try and restore her marriage, but only if Hayler committed to addiction therapy. She commented, “I had to research it, I had to sit with the therapist and talk it through and see the treatment, and he definitely had it.”

Never Really Cured

The therapy that was chosen by Katie ensured that Hayler was given no access to sex, masturbation, porn, the internet, or the gym for eight weeks; after he had completed this, she agreed to give their relationship another go. Despite the progress so far, Katie is not convinced that there is a ‘cure’ as such. She explained, “I don’t think you’re ever really cured, but you can deal with it. And if you see him now – come on. He looks like Farmer Joe. He’s got a one-pack instead of a six-pack.”

Boy into a Man

Hayler now claims to ‘feel sick’ when he looks back at his past where he was obsessed with the gym and worked as a stripper. “I built him an amazing gym at home but he won’t even go in it, and he was really into his fitness before. And when I met him, he would only eat healthy food, but now he eats s**t, s**t, s**t. He doesn’t want to go out with the boys – it’s all about the family, kids, me. I mean, he does everything. I always say he’s turned from a boy into a man.”
